Should we support digesters on CAFO's?

There is no doubt in my mind that our society is not and will not benefit long term from megafarms any more than they will benefit from the corn ethanol fiasco. The problems will become more apparent as the price of fuel increases. We should be supporting farms that are the most efficient and sustainable producers of high quality products. That being said changing our governments direction is a difficult undertaking and it is clear to me that megafarms are going to be around awhile. The question is should we hope they fail quickly or demand high standards that will prolong their life. Not everyone is equally sharing the pain they inflict. If there was one in every township they would be banished. Digesters ease some of the pain for the local folks. They do reduce air pollution. They certainly do not clean up the environmental problems. There is still a lot of phosphorus/phospates to be dealt with. This is the issue that Trout Unlimited should be most concerned about. There are no easy answers.

Re: Should we support digesters on CAFO's?

The primary issue of animal waste disposal is one of concentration. Regardless of the form of the waste, it is not being spread in proportion to the cropland that supplies the CAFO.

If the animal waste is spread across the same area as was used to grow the input feed crops, there would be a balanced plant utilization of the nutrient. The result would be that the nutrients would be sequestered again in the feed plants.

The main issue comes down to economics. The cost of returning the wastes in low concentration are significantly higher than for the current concentrated disposal methods. We come up against the difficulty of large scale operations paying for the total costs resulting from the industrial activities. We see this in many manufacturing and mining operations, both in the past and in current situations.
